This Article is Literally About Doom


We’ve covered a variety of Doom ports here, from Minecraft to McDonald’s cash registers, but this could be the most bizarre. You can watch the FPS game in action below, thanks to someone who been able to run it in GIF format.



It works in a simple way. On this ao3 page you will see a continually evolving Gif of Doom with a set of clickable controls below. Much like the Twitch plays series of games that are controlled by the crowd, every input that’s clicked by anyone who is browsing the page is put into a queue and the server runs through them in order, sending back the updated images. This can make the gif itself a bit unstable due to the constant loading, and the sheer pressure on the server by people trying to view the gif.



Software developer Andrew Sillers is the man who is the man behind the magic. He spoke about the actual process that takes place at BangBangCon. Because gifs start loading before every frame is received, you can create an endless loop where new frames are always being added, transforming them into a flowing animation instead of a looping one. Using this basic premise, and some commands, you can play a videogame like a narrative adventure game, or a roguelike game, or Doom.
